Thu, Jul 12, 2018

Astoria, OR  -  July 12, 2018  -  Astoria has been awarded the 2018 Veterans & War Memorials grant by the Heritage and Community Programs of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, to assist in the continued restoration of the monument. Specifically, the grant will pay for the documentation of the terra cotta tile roof and remove and replace the tiles of the roof.

"With the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I approaching, we have been fortunate to receive statewide and local support in the Doughboy Monument's restoration." said Angela Cosby, Director of Astoria Parks and Recreation. " We are honored to have been awarded this grant, and look forward to showing the families of our veterans that we honor and respect their service to our country."

The Veterans & War Memorials grant is one of two, Veterans and War Memorial Grants received by the Department. In 2017, the Department also received a $12,000 grant from the State Historic Preservation Office to restore the west restroom, patch exterior cracks, repaint the structure, repair the flat roof, and refurbish the flag pole.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department awarded five grants totaling $150,000 for projects across the state that create or preserve memorials to veterans or wars. Awards ranged from $8,850-$48,000.

This competitive grant program was created by the Oregon Legislature in 2005 to provide funding assistance to local governments for the construction and restoration of veterans' and war memorials. The program helps to honor Oregon's soldiers and veterans by commemorating their service to the country.
