Over 100 Participants Run to Support Clatsop Community Action on Thanksgiving Day

Fri, Dec 07, 2018

The Astoria Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Thanksgiving Day Gobbler Gallop 5k raised $320 and donated over 600 lbs of food, to support Clatsop Community Actions’ efforts in combating hunger this holiday season. One hundred and nine participants joined the Department staff in running and walking prior to their Thanksgiving Festivities.

“There are many families in our community who are struggling this holiday season,” said Brianna Bowker, Recreation Manager for the Astoria Parks & Recreation Department. “We feel that this event is a wonderful way to support our mission of providing health and wellness opportunities to our community, as well as supporting the efforts of CCA to provide assistance to families in need.”

In this annual event, people of all abilities were welcome to run or walk with their family and friends along the scenic Astoria River Walk Trail. Prizes of pumpkin pies made by local business, Table 360 Bakery & Bistro, were awarded to the top male and female finishers:

  • First Place Female: Audrey Ross of Madras, Oregon. Finished in 19:32.
  • First Place Male: Matt Speak, Gearhart, Oregon. Finished in 14:05.

Astoria Parks & Recreation was able to host this event, thanks in large part to the efforts of the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association, who raised money at its annual Zero K Instant Gratification Run to fund Astoria Parks’ Fun Runs and its Valentine’s Day Ball. The next “Fun Run” hosted by Astoria Parks will be the New Years’ Day Fun Run which takes place on January first at the Columbia River Maritime Museum.
