ASTORIA, OR – DECEMBER 15, 2021, After almost four and a half years with the City of Astoria Police Department, Chief Geoff Spalding has announced his plans to retire.
Chief Spalding began serving as Astoria’s interim police chief in August of 2017 while the City began the recruitment process to find a permanent Police Chief.
“The plan was for me to serve in this capacity ‘for a few months’ while the City considered its options for selecting a new police chief,” said Spalding. “It didn’t take long for me to realize what a great community this is.”
Spalding previously retired from the Beaverton Police Department where he was Chief for seven and a half years. Prior to working in the City of Beaverton, Spalding was with the Fullerton Police Department in California for 31 years.
Spalding and his wife Diane are looking forward to the next chapter in their lives which will include spending more time with family, and multiple car and construction projects.
The City Manager Brett Estes has hired the services of an executive recruiter to begin the search for a new Police Chief. Spalding will remain in the position during the recruitment process which will begin in the new year and may take up to 16 weeks.
“Chief Spalding has served the City well during his tenure and I know he will be missed,” said City Manager Brett Estes. “We have a great team at the Astoria Police Department and Astoria Dispatch and I appreciate him staying through the hiring process to allow a smooth transition to a new Chief of Police.”
