Waste Management

The City of Astoria previously operated a municipal landfill located at 1790 Williamsport Road, which ceased accepting waste in 1986. The landfill underwent a formal closure process between 2013 and 2014, which included installing a protective cap over the landfill and redeveloping the site into a community sports complex.

The completed project created a 160,000-square-foot all-weather, multi-use sports field, along with associated parking and access improvements, support facilities such as locker rooms, concessions, restrooms, dugouts, spectator seating, utilities, and field lighting.

As part of the landfill’s post-closure permit requirements, the City continues to monitor groundwater and landfill gas to ensure the site remains protective of public health and the environment. Monitoring results and related reports are submitted annually to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in accordance with regulatory requirements.
