CHIP-in

 

Did you know that the City of Astoria Parks and Recreation Department maintains 63 parks?  This includes historic landmarks, the Astoria Riverwalk, Oceanview Cemetery, and the Astoria Aquatic Center.  That is over 200+ acres with limited staff resources to maintain all properties!

You can help make a difference: CHIP-in and give back to your community through park improvement and community service projects!

How to CHIP-in

Volunteer — At any of our parks and facilities on your own time or even for a senior project!

Adopt-a-park — Any group of supportive citizens including businesses and service organizations can pick a park or a part of the Riverwalk to maintain for a 12 month period.

Organize — Neighborhood associations or informal groups of neighbors can help maintain their local park by creating a “friends of” group.

Park Partners — Pick a date and a park and organize a group of friends who want to come together to CHIP-in.

Donate — Ensure the solvency of our great program by making a donation to the CHIP-in program.

CHIP-in Three Main Goals

To Beautify our Parks -- The unique weather that offers mild temperatures and a lot of rainfall lends itself to great growing conditions for many plants; including invasive plant species.  CHIP-in aims to remove these invasive plants without the use of harsh chemicals, to preserve the unique plant species that thrive so well, and to maintain our facilities and our parks.

Reconnect Citizens with their Parks -- Our parks were often times created out of a strong citizenry and community that urged the City to build inviting community spaces.  CHIP-in wants to remind citizens about the history of the parks, who created these parks, and how we can preserve these parks.

Environmental Stewardship -- Individuals, businesses, and communities can help share in the responsibility of taking care of the Columbia River and our natural environment.  By removing trash, picking up cigarette butts, and getting rid of invasive plant species we can help ensure that our children and citizens will be able to enjoy its beauty now and into the future.

• Families who want to teach their children the importance of keeping our City clean
