A movement to save Astoria’s historic structures began in 1985 when the City of Astoria embarked on inventorying its most historic neighborhoods. Since then, over 1,500 buildings were inventoried, resulting in the designation of nearly 870 local landmarks, three National Register Historic Districts and three historic “Inventory Areas.”

Astoria's designation as both an Oregon Heritage All-Star Community and a Certified Local Government reflects the community's longstanding commitment to preserving and celebrating its historic and cultural resources.
Oregon Heritage
The City of Astoria has been recognized as an Oregon Heritage All-Star Community by the Oregon Heritage Commission – one of only eight cities within the State! This designation recognizes communities that demonstrate a strong commitment to preserving, promoting, and investing in their historic and cultural resources.
As an Oregon Heritage All-Star Community, Astoria is eligible for technical assistance, training opportunities, and grant funding that support heritage-related projects and initiatives. These resources help strengthen local preservation efforts, promote heritage tourism, and encourage continued stewardship of the community’s historic and cultural assets.
National Park Service · SHPO
Astoria’s rich history is one of the community’s defining assets. To help preserve that heritage, the City of Astoria participates in the Certified Local Government (CLG) Program, a partnership between the National Park Service, the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), and local governments committed to historic preservation.
As a Certified Local Government, Astoria has demonstrated its commitment to identifying, preserving, and celebrating the historic buildings, neighborhoods, landscapes, and cultural resources that contribute to the community’s unique character. The CLG designation provides the City with access to grant funding and technical assistance to support preservation planning, historic resource surveys, educational programs, and other preservation-related projects.
Through the CLG Program, the City may also offer grant opportunities that assist property owners and organizations in preserving historic resources. Funding is provided through the federal Historic Preservation Fund and administered by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office.
Information regarding current grant opportunities, eligibility requirements, and application materials will be posted below as they become available.
