In 2011 the Astoria Police Department entered into an agreement with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to provide truck inspection services. With Astoria being at the junction of Highways 30, 101, and 202 as well as the border between Washington and Oregon it seemed only natural that this is a service that Astoria Police wanted to offer.
Unfortunately, the ODOT grant which offered reimbursement for truck inspection activities has expired. The department still retains several truck inspectors who conduct inspections while on their regular patrol duties
Why is truck inspection important? Statewide truck inspections find an average of 1.9 violations per inspection. 27% of inspections in Oregon put a commercial motor vehicle out of service for critical safety violations. The Department believes that these inspections improve the safety of the motoring public.
