CITY OF ASTORIA PROHIBITS VACATION AND LEISURE TRAVELERS IN TRANSIENT LODGING

Astoria, OR, March 22, 2020 – The Astoria City Council passed a resolution today at an Emergency Meeting prohibiting vacation and leisure travelers from staying in hotels and short term lodging rentals during the state of emergency which the City of Astoria declared on March 16.
Mayor Bruce Jones says, “Astorians are making great efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, however, the influx of visitors from out of town to the City and our neighboring communities risks compromising those efforts.”
“The sacrifices our residents and business owners have made to help slow the spread of the virus in Astoria protects the capability of our medical providers to treat patients when the virus hits Clatsop County,” says the Mayor. “This resolution ensures those sacrifices are not rendered ineffective.”
While the resolution prohibits vacation stays, it allows for medical and other essential workers to utilizing lodging for employment purposes.
The Mayor understands that there will be a strain on the hotels and smaller transient lodging facilities but believes the risks to our community of visitors during a pandemic is too great to ignore.
