ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS GRAND OPENING AT THE AQUATIC CENTER

The City of Astoria’s Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce the grand opening of four Type 2 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations located at the Astoria Aquatic Center, 1997 Marine Dr. The stations were installed this fall with a grant from Pacific Power’s Electric Vehicle Station Grant program which awarded the Parks Department $45,037 in reimbursable funds to purchase the two dual-port SEMAConnect stations and have them installed by local contractor, Bogh Electric.
Aquatics Supervisor Terra Patterson is looking forward to the added infrastructure at her facility, “We are excited to provide this opportunity to allow our patrons and tourists visiting our facility to utilize sustainable technology at the AAC. Featuring these stations will help highlight our commitment to environmentally-friendly development and use of green technology. We have already instituted many energy-savings innovations inside the center and I’m very happy to add this amenity for public use at our site”. The stations will be accessible to electric vehicle owners to use for four hours at a time, payments for charging fees ($1.50/hour) will be handled through SEMAConnect’s smartphone app.
“We feel that this is a big win for our Department and the community and we’re very grateful to Pacific Power for funding this important project”, says Director of Parks and Recreation Jonah Dart-Mclean. “The stations will help increase the use of electric vehicles in our area and emphasize Astoria’s regional status as a connector for charging options that will draw visitors to the area”.
While the Astoria Aquatic Center facility continues to remain closed to patrons due to financial impacts caused by COVID 19, Parks staff is evaluating potential scenarios to offer limited services.
Strategies and costs for reopening the AAC will be reviewed by City leadership around the first of the new year.
A small, socially-distanced ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for November 23rd at 3PM, the public is welcome to attend.
